SCHEDULE

7:30-8:30am: Registration, Coffee & Donuts

8:00-8:10am: Welcome

8:10-10:10am: Session 1

High Performance New Construction (presented by Joe Nagan, Home Building Technology Services, LLC) - 2 CEU's

In this session you will look at the ‘performance related factors’ that impact both existing and new homes. Whether building a new home or trying to improve an existing home, the basic building science principles apply. Having a basic understanding of these principles is the best way to deliver a quality product and avoid costly callbacks. Topics will include: historical perspectives in construction, moisture issues, air flow and quality, insulation & sealing of a home, combustion safety, and testing and evaluation.

10:20-11:50am: Session 2

Pushing the Envelope: Trends in Energy Efficiency (presented by Joe Nagan, Home Building Technology Services, LLC) - 1.5 CEU's

Wisconsin homes are built pretty energy efficient right out of the box. In order to get better efficiency with a new home, a proven method of estimating the impacts of construction options must be used. You can spend more money building a home by upgrading individual components such as windows, but how do you know the energy impact in ‘dollars’ to the consumer. What about mechanical equipment? The same question can be raised. We have used REM/Rate software for modeling over 28,000 new Wisconsin homes and have had this software independently verified for reliability. In this particular session the presenter will use this software to demonstrate how decisions were made when the 2010 WBA Trend Home was conceived and built. Actual utility bill calculations will be reviewed.

11:50 - 12:30pm: Lunch

12:30 - 2:00pm: Session 3

Concrete: the what, the why and the why not! (presented by Matt Flynn, American Materials Corporation) - 1.5 CEU'sc

Learn about cold weather concrete and the mixes and additives that will yield the best results. In this session you will understand the importance of curing and sealing concrete which can prevent surface failures. You will also explore design innovations such as a low or no shrink concrete, which can reduce or eliminate the need to cut control joints. This session will show what’s new with colored and stamped concrete and discuss the concrete countertop trend.

2:30-3:10pm: Session 4

Large Point Loads with Wood Construction (presented by Jared Bankston, Weyerhaeuser) - 1 CEU

This presentation will provide information on not only how large point loads accumulate in a typical residential project, but how to properly support them down to the foundation. Topics will include: where are the large loads coming from, built up columns vs solid sections, column top and bottom connections, column bearing and cantilevered supports.
